Viruses That Linger on Surfaces and in the Air

From bloodborne viruses like HIV and hepatitis B to respiratory and enteric viruses like influenza and norovirus, viral pathogens can persist on surfaces from hours to weeks. Some—especially norovirus—are highly resistant and require specific disinfectants at elevated concentrations. Cleaning followed by targeted disinfection is essential to interrupt transmission.

The Pathogens We Target

Each of these organisms poses a distinct, documented risk in healthcare settings—and each requires the right disinfectant applied the right way.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

Bloodborne virus

Remains infectious 1+ week after drying

HBV can survive in dried blood on surfaces for over a week and remain capable of causing infection. Proper handling of blood spills and disinfection of contaminated surfaces is a core bloodborne-pathogen requirement.

HIV

Human immunodeficiency virus

Detectable 7+ days in lab conditions

Although fragile compared to HBV, HIV has been shown to persist on surfaces for days under experimental conditions. Standard precautions and disinfection protect both patients and EVS/clinical staff from exposure.

Influenza

Seasonal & pandemic flu

Persists 1–2 days on hard surfaces

Influenza survives longest on non-porous surfaces and can transfer to hands and mucous membranes. Routine disinfection of high-touch points during flu season measurably reduces environmental spread.

Norovirus

The "winter vomiting" virus

Persists 8 hours to 7+ days; highly resistant

Norovirus is extremely contagious and resists many disinfectants, often requiring sodium hypochlorite at higher concentrations. It is a frequent cause of explosive healthcare and long-term-care outbreaks driven by contaminated surfaces.

Coronaviruses

SARS-CoV-2 and related

Hours to several days depending on surface

Human coronaviruses can persist on surfaces long enough to contribute to hospital-acquired transmission. Consistent surface disinfection remains a key layer of protection.
